Another View of My Favorite Restaurant

There is something special about pulling up in a boat to a restaurant among the palm trees on shore, and ordering a beer and a cheeseburger in paradise, with crisp salty shoe-string french fries and a kosher dill pickle.

This is the Green Parrot Restaurant on Paradise Island in the Bahamas where one can do just that.  This view was taken last Sunday.

Dramatic Picture of Storm At Sea

(click for larger image)

I was out on a boat on the ocean a few miles off Nassau.  As we were approaching New Providence, we saw this storm off in the distance.  The rain below the storm cloud is intense, and yet the sun is shining on the upper stretches of the cloud.  It is a dramatic pic.

Paddle Boarding in the Cayman Islands

I

I shot this short video of paddle boarders against a beautiful sunset on Seven Mile Beach in the Cayman Islands last week.  This was on the beach of the Westin Hotel which faces west and has gorgeous sunsets.

Enjoy.

Best Local Food in the Cayman Islands

(click for larger image)

We were looking for a place in the Cayman Islands to have lunch.  One of the highest rated eateries according to TripAdvisor.com on the island was this food shack at the end of Seven Mile Beach.

I ordered the fried grouper.  Let me tell you, tripadvisor was not wrong.  They have their own delicious hot sauce that they package and sell in recycled jars that is delicious.

The cost of a fried grouper combination plate that included a generous portion of fresh fried grouper with sauce, seasoned rice, a couple of fried plantain sticks, a fritter and half a key lime was $10 Cayman dollars which is $12.50 US.

Well worth the trip.  The eating place is picnic tables next to it under a patio awning, and that is awesome too , because the sea is just across the street.

Some Cayman Island Views

I am currently in the Cayman Islands and these are some postcards from here.

Present day reminds me of times gone by

I take a lot of pictures. Most of them are pretty mundane. But every once in a while, a perfect storm of composition, lighting, and subject matter happens by accident, and I get some memorable photos. These are two such photos that happen this summer.

Both of them hearken back to an earlier simpler nostalgic time when the farm was a major feature of North American life.

I call the first one "Home on the Range" where I caught some horses in a sunlit pasture in the mountains:

The second one is the fallen down family homestead barn. All that is left is the silo.

Borat Had it Right about Azerbaijan

Doesn't this look like a parody out of a Borat film? It is in fact a picture of Aliev, the Prime Minister or President of Azerbaijan. Look at the honor guard in the background. Look at the nose and the mustache that looks like a tuft of underarm hair or worse under a hugely Roman nose. This really looks like a parody.

But the sad part is that an ax murderer chopped up an Armenian in Turkey. Armenia and Azerbaijan border one another and they hate each other guts. The Turks imprisoned the ax murderer. Azerbaijan requested his extradition to serve his jail time at home. They promised the Turks that it would be at least 25 years. When the chopper dude gets home, he get a pardon and free apartment, just to piss off the Armenians. This is really a Borat film come to life. It is Life Imitating Art.

The other Life Imitating Art episode happened when a World's games committee awarded a gold medal to an Azerbaijani athlete. They downloaded the Azerbaijan national anthem from the internet. It was the fake Borat parody version. This is a country that could be put on television as reality entertainment.

My Dog's Secret

My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day. He has his food prepared for him. He can eat whenever he wants.

His meals are provided at no cost to him.

He visits the Doctor once a year for his checkup, and again during the year if any medical needs arise.

For this he pays nothing, and nothing is required of him.

He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep.

He makes no contribution to the running or maintenance of the house.

If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up.

He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep. He receives these accommodations absolutely free.

He is living like a King, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever.

All of his costs are picked up by others who go out, work hard, and earn a living every day.

I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick in the head.

Plant Hunting Expeditions of David Fairchild to the Bahamas

(click for larger image)

If you are in Nassau on September 12, 2012, and are looking for something interesting to do, go and attend a lecture by Dr. Javier Ortega at the Retreat -- the headquarters of the Bahamas National Trust.

Dr. Ortega will talk about the plant hunting expeditions of David Fairchild to the archipelago of the Bahamas. If you at all inclined towards exotic plants, gardening, science, botany or ecology, it should prove an interesting evening.
